Where to Eat Good Crepes in Barcelona

Last Tuesday was Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday)! That means pancake time! Or it is “crepes” time, as we say in France! So where to eat good crepes in Barcelona? I hear you ask me.

We like Breton crepes

By “Crepes”, I mean Breton crepes, especially the savoury ones. They are the best! I tried two different spots in the city. I was so little impressed by the first one I don’t even remember its name. But I liked “Les 3 pommes”, French for “The 3 Apples”.

Breton crepes are typically served with . It is the best cider in the world, in my opinion, but I might be little biased. It has this really delicate apple taste and sweetness that infuse your palate.

A buckwheat crepe as main

“Les 3 pommes” offers a great choice of pancakes. Savoury ones are usually prepared with buckwheat flour. It gives the pancake a particular but delicious texture and flavour.

I like classic crepes, so I choose the complete one: cheese, ham, mushrooms and egg. The taste is close to the ones I used to have in Paris, with a lot of melting cheese. Yum! I can taste every single ingredient on the crepe. That is a plus! My friend, a vegetarian, had a spinach crepe and was raving about it. The place is good!

Having a bowl of cider with our crepes!

We savoured our crêpes with a jar of cider served in bowls. Very traditional! So why is cider served in bowls in Breton’s crêperies? History tells that in the old days, glass and earthenware were uncommon.

At that time, everyone made their own crockery, frequently out of terra cotta. Glasses used to look more like small bowls, nowadays called “bolées.”

Try those in “Les 3 pommes” if you want to know what I am talking about.

A crepe suzette for dessert

After our main, we shared a crepe suzette. In France, it is yet another classic crepe recipe. This one was filled with orange marmalade and then flambéed with Grand Marnier. I don’t have a sweet tooth but I thought it was the nicest pancake I have eaten, in a while.

The marmalade was not too sweet yet tasted like orange, and it was boozy (thumb up from me)! The chef even flambéed it in front of our eyes. Yep & yum!

If you go to les 3 pommes, let them know, you found them in my blog.
