I regularly hang out in Marsella with my friends. We like this cool Barcelona absinthe bar.
In Raval
The bar is situated in a unique area in Raval. I was shocked the first time I walked down this street. Several prostitutes were standing around. For someone like me, accustomed to a comfortable and cosy world, this is a parallel universe.
Of course, prostitution exists in every city. But when you plan to spend a night out and have fun with your friends, it is a harsh reality that pops in front of your eyes. Especially if you are not ready for it.
After the first moment of shock, I followed my friends into the building. And here we are inside Marsella.
Marsella, a Barcelona absinthe bar with character
Marsella was Barcelona’s first bar, making it the oldest in the city. The bar is pretty old alright. It has a lot of charms and character with its feel of the 19th century.
Marsella features a vintage aesthetic with a peeling ceiling, mirrors all over the walls and shelves of dusty old bottles. Along with the chandeliers, the room’s golden walls contribute to its bohemian vibe. It is always packed with friends, ex-pats and tourists who mix in good spirits. And the atmosphere is usually pleasant.
Every time I come, all the tables are busy, but somehow one frees up magically when we enter. After seating us, the waiter inquires about our order.
“Six glasses of absinthe, please!” Yes, absinthe!
Absinthe drinking experience in Marsella
Our drinks arrive. Six glasses of golden liquor, two bottles of water with a pierced cap, sugar and forks. There is a ritual to follow to drink absinthe.
I first soak my sugar cube in the alcohol before burning it with a lighter. This is to improve the taste of the drink, strong and bitter. Then I drizzle water over the sugar cube to easily dissolve it in the glass. I stop when the liquid becomes a clear yellow.
The drink is strong and aniseed-flavoured. Before my lips touch the glass, I keep in the back of my mind that tomorrow I might wake up with a strong headache and a hangover.
Saved by the bell
Even more so when I find myself competing with another friend to see who can finish their second glass first. What has gotten into me? Drinking a glass of absinthe like a shot!
At least, I won! A chicken curry dinner cooked by him. Hopefully, A will remember my prize when he sobers up. He does not admit defeat, though, and challenges me to a vodka shots drinking contest. We head towards the bar. The barman turns his back on us and completely ignores A’s calls. It is time to close and pack up. Thank God! I am saved by the bell!
