Our Number 1 Best Ice Cream in Barcelona!

It is now June. There are still three weeks to go before summer. But the weather is getting nicer and warmer. This is a good time for ice cream in Barcelona.

And where can you find tasty ice cream, gelato style, in the city? At DelaCrem, an initiative by an Italian chef, Massimo Pignata.

I went to their shop in Passeig de Sant Joan last Sunday. They also have a second location in Enric Granados which is, in fact, the first shop they opened in the city.

I will try this other spot next week for research purposes. I am very dedicated to my objective of bringing you to the best places in Barcelona.

I queued for 20 minutes for ice cream

There was quite a long queue in front of the shop. Was that ice cream worth the wait?  Were we not better off going somewhere else? No. Let’s give it a go.

I have a good feeling about this. I have also heard good reviews from different friends about this place. So we patiently waited in line for what seemed an eternity but, in reality, was only twenty minutes.

A fantastic choice of flavours

To kill time, we check the options on the blackboard outside. I take a picture with my phone and come back to my place in line.

Delacrem offers classic flavours such as vanilla, pistachio, and strawberry. They also have creative ones like lemon pie or mascarpone, coffee, and toffee. Interesting.

Finally, it is our turn. The ice cream shop is small. We can only take ice creams away.  At the back, you can see what looks like the “ice cream factory”.

An artisanal process

The ice cream here is elaborated onsite following an artisanal process with seasonal and local ingredients. I appreciate the sustainability side of DelaCrem. While we wait to order, some delivery guys compete for attention. This place is popular.

I taste my scoops. I chose Vermouth orange and lemon pie as I was in the mood for novelty and adventure. My partner in ice cream chose mascarpone, coffee and toffee — we both got cones.

Is this the best ice cream in Barcelona?

The ice cream is delicious and refined. It is not overly sweet – I like that. It is light and not sticky the way ice cream can sometimes be. Our scoops are creamy and full of flavours.

I can clearly taste vermouth and orange. It is fresh and fun. The lemon pie strongly alludes to an airy lemon pie (without the biscuit base).

On the mascarpone, coffee and toffee one, we tasted more toffee than coffee. We are coffee ice cream lovers. We wanted more of that flavour.

Overall, the experience was very satisfying. It was worth the twenty-minutes wait. And yes, it is the best ice cream in Barcelona so far.

Post edit about the best ice cream in Barcelona

I went for ice cream at DelaCrem Granados as planned. The place is a café, which means they have seats on the terrace and inside. They also have some delicious-looking cakes here, but I have not tried them.

The ice cream flavours differed from the Passeig de Sant Joan shop but equally delicious. We wanted to try the “ice cream of the day” (cherry), but it was over. They only produce a limited quantity of ice cream everyday so you have more options if you come earlier!
