Do you have a sweet tooth and are looking for the best cakes in Barcelona?
Here is my selection of the top pâtisseries in the city, presented in no particular order. They are excellent and use high-quality ingredients. Each one shines due to its unique identity.
Mauri Barcelona
My parents introduced me to Mauri Barcelona. They were returning from lunch at the Boqueria, walked by this Catalan pastry shop and decided to have desserts there.
The bakery has a huge selection of mouthwatering cakes. Unless you know what to go for, the choice would be hard. Thankfully, we all have different tastes so we can buy several treats and taste each other’s.
That is how I got to try the fruit tartlets, millefeuille, chocolate cakes and red velvet. Everything is super delicious and not overly sugary.
A classically chic Catalan tea house
Mauri Barcelona is also a tea house. The interior has a classically chic and traditional aesthetic adding to the feeling of an authentic local experience.
You can enjoy coffee and cakes while sitting down, but you can also order some great sandwiches. We had a salmon one.
I would not recommend the cooked dishes, but the cakes and the sandwiches are great and ideal for a gourmet break, brunch, or a light lunch.

Escribà
I used to come here every two weeks for their cakes. That is to show how good this place is. This place is another Catalan bakery specialising in Haute patisserie, owned and headed by a renowned pastry chef, Christian Escribà.
Escribà is the most creative bake shop I have encountered so far in Barcelona. Their creations are visually spectacular. I still remember a chocolate cake in the shape of a cute sheep. It pained me to shatter it with my spoon. Or a cake shaped like red lips reminding me of Dali’s iconic lips.
I walked several times through Gran Via on my way home. Each time, I stopped in front of their dreamy window shop display with my mouth gaping open like a child.

Takashi Ochiai
This pâtisserie bears the name of Takashi Ochiai, its well-known pastry chef and owner from Japan.
For me, this place wins in several categories: best matcha tea, best breakfast, best cakes, best ice creams, and incredible croissants.
The premises are minimalistic. I have found plenty of prettier and warmer cafes in Barcelona. However, the latter ones don’t serve the level of cake deliciousness and quality Takashi Ochiai offers.
I have tasted and gifted many of their products: the chocolate creations, the truffles, the mochis, the croissants, ice creams, cakes, matcha milkshakes, and even their yule log for Christmas.
Takashi Ochiai proposes delicate Japanese pastries and sweets in addition to Catalan and French desserts using Japanese ingredients.
