Today is March 8th, and I usually celebrate International Women’s day in Barcelona in one way or another.
Girly gatherings of all forms
The first time I celebrated this day in Barcelona, we had a women-only brunch that was a lot of fun. I will spend time with a few girlfriends around a glass of wine and finger foods (pica pica) this evening. And I am looking forward to that moment! If you check, various events are organised in the city for Women to celebrate this day.
When I can, I participate in the demonstration through the streets of Barcelona, similar to the thousands of people who go on strike and then take to the streets on Women’s day in Barcelona each year.
It is a pacifist march that gathers women of all ages. Some men also participate. I like to see young girls rallying together with their homemade signs.
The strike and march on International Women’s day in Barcelona
I joined the strike with my female coworkers at the time once, out of solidarity with Women around the world. Our main idea was to support Women’s rights.
The experience did not repeat afterwards. But in the following years, after the work day, I used to meet friends to march in the city, joining the feminist walk going on Gran Via.
The word “feminist” could scare many, but just focus on the fact that the march is a platform of expression where you can be with people who share concerns and hopes for Women.
I am joining it because I am a woman, and no matter what, unpleasant things have happened and can happen again for the unique reason that I am a woman. I believe I am not the only one in this case. So this is a symbolic act of raising awareness.
Would you participate to the march?
Details of the march this evening
